The calendar says that fall is here, but it’s hard to believe that it will ever cool down in Florida. We’ve endured a very hot summer, and we can’t wait for the cooler weather to arrive! We did experience a quick cool snap this weekend that has made the temps for bareabe but I am looking forward to wearing layers and outerwear. After all, layering pieces are extremely fashionable—You can really pull a look together with a pretty cardigan or a cool jacket. Speaking of jackets, there have been very few garments that have demonstrated staying power in the fashion world like the leather jacket. It has a rich fashion history that began in the early 1900s and makes lots of appearances in celebrity and pop culture. And I think you can agree that leather jackets are just cool!
Leather is huge for fall 2018. It doesn’t matter if it’s real or faux leather – it all looks great. A leather jacket is an ideal staple to own. It will never go out of style and is simply perfect for layering. It can instantly transform your outfit into a fashionable, pulled-together look. Options for styling a leather jacket are endless. You can go casual or dressy, sexy or practical. It’s always a go-to item that completes your look. Let’s take a look at leather jackets and their fashion during the years.
History of Leather Jackets
The leather jacket – particularly the leather bomber jacket – actually had a practical beginning. Leather bomber jackets were introduced for fighter pilots (including Amelia Earhart) during World War I. In the 1920’s Irving Scott’s invention of the motorcycle jacket was sold for $5.50 at Harley Davidson. In the 1950s, leather jackets became all the rage when Marlon Brando stepped onto the silver screen in his vintage motorcycle biker jacket by Schott. Ladies swooned over this “bad boy” look. and men wanted to be cool like Brando with their own leather jackets. Elvis donned them, as well The Beatles and Steve McQueen.
Leather jackets were redefined over the next few years, and in the 1980s, music icons like Debbie Harry, Joan Jett, and Madonna made them fashionable once again. In the 1990s, supermodels such as Kate Moss and Cindy Crawford wore sleek black leather jackets over a white tee with jeans (a look that still rocks today). Leather continues to be fashionably hot to this day.
Must-Have Leather Staples for Fall 2018
Leather is definitely essential for fall fashion. I already purchased a pair of leather shorts and a leather skirt for my wardrobe. One of the best things about leather pieces are that they can provide many different looks, from dressy to casual. For example, I’ve been seeing vintage t-shirts paired with leather skirts and sneakers. But this look can also be dressed up by just adding heels. Leather gives you the opportunity to be playful with your style for nights out. Leather also allows you to create a demure and polished look for business meetings, charity events, etc.
If you’re looking for a leather jacket that’s edgy and chic, consider designer moto Jackets by Alexander Wang. For example, this black calf leather full-zipped jacket from Alexander Wang features a notched collar, front zipped pockets, long sleeves, zipped cuffs and a zip chest pocket. Another great choice is the Leather Notch Lapel Blazer by Rebecca Taylor. This buttery, single-breasted leather blazer feathers slight ruching at the shoulder and patch pockets, and it’s perfect for dressing up or down. If a black leather biker jacket is your style, how about the LaMarque Classic Leather Biker Jacket in lamb leather? Featuring a semi-fitted feminine silhouette and notched collar with snaps, this leather jacket is timeless. Or the IRO Ashville Leather Jacket is another beautiful tailor classic-fit jacket with beautiful accents.
Want more than just a jacket? I love these RtA Rummer Leather skinny-fit leather pants which make even the shortest legs look long and lovely. Or the BB Dakota Conrad Leather Skirt by Revolve is another gorgeous clothing piece to add for amazing legs. It’s short yet elegant and a fantastic addition for those warmer winter days here in Florida.
Looking for faux leather? There are plenty of amazing options there as well. Have a look at SPANX Faux Leather Leggings if you looking for comfortable yet flattering leggings which can be dressed up or down. For an edgy leather-look jacket, I love the BLANKNYC Meant to Be Moto Jacket with removable hood. (They have lots of amazing leather fashion as well.) Or for a more classic look, the Topshop Rosa Biker Jacket featuring quilted shoulders and edgy zippered embellishments is a perfect pick.
