Microneedling has become very popular lately. It is used to minimize the signs of aging. I feel like micro-needling with PRP (also known as the vampire facial) is all over social media. I remember all of the buzz when Kim Kardashian posted the picture of her face after she had the treatment. I have been dying to try it but needed to do my research on where to get it done.
What is Microneedling?
Microneedling is a cosmetic procedure that is used to treat age spots, wrinkles, scarring, and hyper-pigmentation. It’s also used in anti-aging procedures such as eyelid surgery and getting rid of sunspots. Also known as collagen induction therapy, microneedling induces the production of collagen and strengthens the epidermis. The skin loses collagen naturally through aging and even through injuries.
During the procedure, a device with needles is used to prick the skin to stimulate collagen production. Microneedling with PRP is down to create more tightness in the skin and speed the healing process. A technician uses a wand to pass over your skin. This wand contains very fine needles that create tiny little micro-injuries in your skin. But don’t worry – these little wounds don’t hurt, and they actually trigger your skin to synthesize new collagen.

You’ll notice results after one session, but ideal results are achieved after multiple sessions. Microneedling isn’t effective for hair loss, despite the possible role of collagen in hair growth. It’s far more beneficial than at-home treatments. The new skin tissue is more even in tone and in texture, and the collagen helps the skin to look and feel firmer.
The Microneedling Procedure
The first part of this procedure is getting your face numb. While your face is numb, blood is drawn from your arm. Then your blood is put into a centrifuge, which separates the PRP from the blood. The PRP is massaged into the treatment area during microneedling. Microneedling opens channels into your skin to allow for good penetration of the PRP. Since the platelets are taken directly from each patient, the body immediately accepts them as a healing agent when it is topically applied. The platelet-rich plasma jump-starts the body’s healing response. This reaction is what causes new collagen to synthesize.
There is minimal downtime for this procedure. Right after my appointment, it looked like I had a really bad sunburn. It faded after a couple of hours and I even went to an event that night. The only thing with the procedure was that you can’t wear makeup for three days. I was already committed to the event and knew I had to go. My skin had a glow and that night I was getting compliments on my skin. The next day I woke up and my skin looked great. I felt it just kept looking better and better. My pigmentation has drastically reduced and my skin’s texture looks better.
So far, I am loving microneedling! I will be doing this every month for a total of four treatments, and I’m looking forward to even better-looking, healthier skin.
